Alpha-Stim

What Is It?

Alpha-Stim is a non-invasive medical device that uses Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES), sending gentle, low-level electrical microcurrents through electrodes place on the earlobes or scalp. These currents directly stimulate specific brain regions and promote relaxation, and alleviate anxiety, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain.

It is a passive process where the device directly influences brain activity without requiring active participation and promote neurotransmitter balance.

How It Works

The microcurrent targets the brain's natural electrical activity, modulating neural communication and restoring balance to the central nervous system. It is believed to influence the production and regulation of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins—which all play a key role in mood, relaxation, and pain perception.

Benefits

  • Anxiety Relief: Calms overactive neural pathways in the brain's stress response system, promoting relaxation and reducing symptoms of anxiety.
  • Improved Sleep: Helps regulate the sleep cycle and promotes deeper, more restorative rest by calming the mind and reducing racing thoughts.
  • Alleviates Depression: Enhances mood and modulates brain chemistry by influencing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
  • Relieves Chronic Pain: Targets nerve signals to reduce pain perception and alleviate conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and migraines.
  • Enhances Focus and Clarity: Improves mental clarity and concentration by balancing brainwave activity.
  • Promote Emotional Resilience: Helps manage stress, leading to better emotional regulation in challenging situations.
  • Reduces Inflammation: Microcurrents can help decrease inflammation, aiding in recovery and physical comfort.

Why Choose Alpha-Stim?

Alpha-Stim is a powerful tool for achieving better mental and physical well-being without the side effects commonly associated with medications.

Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback is a therapeutic technique that helps individuals gain control over automatic bodily functions, such as heart rate, muscle tension, and breathing, through real-time feedback. Using sensors that monitor physiological responses, it teaches people to recognize and adjust their body’s signals to improve health and well-being. Key applications include stress reduction, pain management, and improving mental health conditions like anxiety and insomnia. Over time, individuals can use biofeedback to self-regulate their body’s responses, leading to lasting improvements in relaxation, emotional control, and overall health.

Biofeedback is the use of signals from your own body to improve your health. If you've stepped on a scale or taken your temperature, for example, you've received "feed back" information that you then perhaps acted on. A therapist may use more advanced biofeedback techniques to help clients suffering from anxiety, stress, or tension headaches. One such technique uses a machine that picks up electrical signals in the muscles. As the client tries to relax their muscles, they can get an immediate progress report by watching the speed of the signals, and thus learn how to better control their mind and body.

What It Treats

  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Chronic Pain
  • Insomnia
  • Attenion-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback therapy is the practice of direct biofeedback for the brain, enabling clients to alter their own brainwaves through practice and repetition. We observe the brain in action from moment to moment, show that information back to the person, and reward the brain for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. Neurofeedback is also called 'EEG Biofeedback' because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG.

Neurofeedback Treatment

Neurofeedback treatment is helpful in treating social, emotional, and behavioral problems without using costly medications that come with a plethora of side effects. Very few psychotropic medications have FDA approval in children too. ACTS has one of the only state-of-the-art wireless headsets in the greater Lancaster, PA and Reading, PA areas.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive treatment that retrains the brain to a typical or balanced state, thus improving focus, attention, calm states, and moods.

This treatment has resulted in profound and permanent positive change, improving client functioning significantly.

Clinical Treatment

Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain dysregulation. These happen to be numerous. They include the anxiety-depression spectrum, attention deficits, behavior disorders, sleep disorders, headaches and migraines, PMS, and emotional disturbances. It is also useful for organic brain conditions such as seizures, the autism spectrum, and cerebral palsy.

Enhance Your Performance

School / Work / and Sports
  • Improves attention and focus
  • Improves emotional control
  • restores brain function after Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Slows cognitive decline as we age
  • Anxiety reduction
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Improves mental flexibilty
  • Enhances memory
  • Improves test performance

By leveraging the brain's ability to adapt, Neurofeedback treatment reshapes and reorganizes neural networks. It is a way to train the brain to function better directly. It is a research-supported treatment to sharpen attention, relieve anxiety, enhance mood, and improve learning and behavior without medication. The goal of this type of therapy is to teach self-regulation and improve specific brainwave patterns associated with mental health or performance.

Neurofeedback is a non-covered treatment modality by any third-party insurance company and all treatment is subject to out-of-pocket expenses.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is biofeedback for the brain.

Using a state of the art EEG system, the electrical activity of a person's brain is measured and feedback is provided to them through a computer interface. Neurofeedback rewards the client and the brain for changing poor brain functioning to appropriate patterns of functioning. This gradual learning process is achieved through operant conditioning resulting in self-regulation. Self-regulation training allows the brain to function more efficiently and effectively. The changes achieved through Neurofeedback are clinically proven to be permanent, eliminating the need for lifelong treatment.

Neurofeedback is direct training of brain function, by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. We observe the brain in action from moment to moment and show that information back to the person. We reward the brain for changing its activity to more appropriate patterns. This is a gradual learning process. It applies to any aspect of brain function that we can measure. Neurofeedback is also called EEG Biofeedback because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG. Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation. It is simply biofeedback applied to the brain directly. Self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Self-regulation training allows the system (the central nervous system) to function better.

Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain dysregulation. These are numerous, including the anxiety-depression spectrum, attention deficits, behavior disorders, sleep disorders, headaches and migraines, PMS, and emotional disturbances. It is also useful for organic brain conditions such as seizures, the autism spectrum, and cerebral palsy.

Although the technology is complex, the process is simple, painless, and non-invasive. It is just learning. You learn to alter your brain activity the way you learn every other skill. You learn through feedback and practice. What is new in Neurofeedback is that you are guided by a form of feedback previously unavailable to you. With Neurofeedback, you get instantaneous information or feedback about changes in your brain’s electrical activity. Every half second, your brain activity is compared to your target or goal for change. You get a signal and “reward” when you meet the goal. No signal or reward when you do not.

Recommended by Leading Doctors:
“With Neurofeedback, the child exercises the nerve pathways that control attention and mental processing. As these neural pathways are exercised, children develop a sense of what concentration feels like, and they get excited about it. After practicing these exercises for some time, the pathways involved in attention and learning seem to work more efficiently. This enhanced brain activity becomes a natural part of the child's functioning.”

William Sears, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine and practicing pediatrician for more than three decades.

Repetition to Create Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and adjust their activities in response to new situations or changes in their environment.

For Example, in 20 neurofeedback sessions, with feedback every half second, you get 72,000 chances to learn. That’s a lot of repetition and practice. Brain science has shown that repetitive exercise of brain networks results in the brain change. This is called neuroplasticity. Neurofeedback allows you to harness neuroplasticity to get to the root of the problem and reshape your brain. Learn more.

Neurofeedback is Just Learning, Guided by Immediate Feedback

Neurofeedback is like a game when children have to find a hidden object. You give them hints: “You’re getting warmer” when they get closer to the target, and “You’re getting colder” when they are headed away from the goal. With frequent enough hints, they can find the object, no matter where it is hidden. The hints are feedback about their efforts to reach their goal. As long as they learn from the feedback and adjust their search based on these hints, they will be able to reach the target.

When you do Neurofeedback, the process is exactly the same – feedback-guided learning. You are trying to reach your brain change targets. You get a cue or signal every half second to tell you when you have reached the brain training target and when you have not. With 20 neurofeedback sessions, you get 72,000 hints. That’s a lot of opportunities to learn, to guide your brain towards your goals.

Neurofeedback History

Neurofeedback began in the late 1950's, early 1960's through the work of both Dr. Joe Kamiya at the University of Chicago and Dr. Barry Sterman at UCLA. Dr. Kamiya was studying consciousness and discovered that by using a simple reward system, people could learn to alter their brain activity. This was the first ever EEG neurofeedback training. Several years later during a NASA research project the discovery that the training of the electrical activity in the brains of cats led them to be resistant to seizures. Fifty+ years later, NASA is still using neurofeedback. From there the training was applied clinically to epilepsy and then to ADHD, sports performance, etc. When the functioning of the brain is improved, great things happen!
